A Homily for the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Today the Church invites us to contemplate the Sacred Heart of Jesus, one of the most beloved images in our Catholic faith. In Scripture, the heart represents the center of a person—the place of love, compassion, mercy, and commitment. The Sacred Heart reveals to us the very love of God made visible in Jesus Christ.
In our first reading, Moses reminds Israel that God did not choose them because they were powerful or impressive. He chose them because He loved them. That simple truth is at the heart of today’s feast. God’s love is not something we earn. It is a gift. He loved us before we ever did anything to deserve it.
Saint John takes this even further in the second reading when he tells us, “God is love.” Every action of God toward us flows from that love. Creation, redemption, forgiveness, and the gift of eternal life all come from the loving Heart of our Savior. The image of the Sacred Heart reminds us that Christ’s love is constant and faithful. The Heart surrounded by thorns teaches us that Jesus continues to love even when His love is rejected. His mercy is greater than our failures.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks words that have brought comfort to Christians for centuries: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Notice that Jesus does not say, “Come to me when you have everything figured out.” He does not say, “Come to me when you are perfect.” He simply says, “Come to me.”
What this means for us today is simple. When we feel discouraged, overwhelmed, or unworthy, we should turn to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His love has not changed. His mercy has not diminished. The Heart that was pierced on Calvary still burns with love for each one of us.
One practical way to keep before our eyes the love of Christ is to place an image of His Sacred Heart in our homes. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun who received private revelations from Jesus in the 17th century, was told by Our Lord to spread devotion to His Most Sacred Heart.
In these visions, Jesus made a series of promises associated with devotion to His Sacred Heart: peace in families, consolation in troubles, abundant mercy for sinners, blessings upon homes where His image is honored, and special graces at the hour of death. Perhaps the best-known promise is connected to receiving Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays.
Today is also the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests. Established in 2002 by Pope Saint John Paul II, we are encouraged today to pray for the holiness, fidelity, and continued spiritual strength of priests worldwide. It is fitting that this day of prayer for priests falls on the feast of the Sacred Heart because every priest is called to reflect the compassionate Heart of Christ, the Good Shepherd. Let us remember to pray for our priests, bishops, and future vocations.
Dear friends in Christ, the Gospel itself is written in the Sacred Heart: God loves us with a burning love.
Christ died for us and rose for us. He is truly alive today and invites us to rest in His love and to share that love with others.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, make our hearts more like yours. Amen.
